Misconception & Biblical Response

The following is a small sampling of inappropriate common misconceptions and appropriate biblical responses:

•‘Someone must have done something really wrong for something this bad to happen (or the person has ‘unconfessed sin’ in their life).’---
Now as Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth. And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him.” (John 9:1-3)
----Neither the parents nor the afflicted caused the afflictions to come on---It was GOD who had a plan to use the man in this way!

•’This person/child is a ‘mistake’.’
For you formed my inward parts: You covered me in my mother’s womb
I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made:
Marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well.
My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret,
and skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed.
And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me,
when as yet there were none of them. (Psalm 139 13-16)
---The person that ‘looks’ like a mistake was ‘fearfully and wonderfully made’ and ‘skillfully wrought’ by God just like you were!---

• 'I don’t get involved with ‘them’. There are ‘programs’ for ‘those people’.
---There are 24 chapters in the Gospel of Luke. In 9 of those chapters (37% of the book) Jesus is with one, two or a whole town of afflicted people. If the followers of Jesus are to be like Him, what does the percentage of their time spent with the afflicted compare to Jesus’ schedule? Church leaders, can you ‘lead like Jesus’ without being with and serving the disabled and their families?

‘Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.” (Luke 14:12-14)
